Description

The Maiden’s Bridge (Jungfernbrücke, Ger. Jungfernbrücke) is the oldest surviving bridge in Berlin and the only drawbridge in the city.nAs indicated by the chronicler Friedrich Nicolai in 1786, the bridge was built by Martin Grünberg. It was a wooden drawbridge over Kupfergraben (now Schloisengraben), which connected Friedrichsgracht with Old Leipzig Street, which led to the then Leipzig City Gate. In 1748, the bridge was first mentioned under the name “Jungfernbrücke”.nIn 1798, the wooden bridge was replaced by a new one made of wood and iron, and the middle part of the bridge was still lifted with the help of chains and wheels for the passage of ships. This bridge has remained unchanged in its historical appearance to the present day.
