Palace Square

Berlin’s Palace Square is located on the island of Spreeinsel in the Mitte district in the immediate vicinity of the Museum Island.nThe square is obliged by its name to the City Palace standing on this spot, demolished in 1950. In 1891, according to the design of sculptor Reinhold Begas, the Neptune fountain was erected on Palace Square.nAt the time of the GDR, there was a parking lot on the square, sometimes it was used for large demonstrations. Later, in 1976, the Palace of the Republic occupied half of the square.nAfter 1989, excavations were carried out on Palace Square, part of the foundation of the palace is still accessible to the public. The square received its former name in 1994. At the present time, a new building in the size of the former palace is being erected on this site with a partial restoration of its three facades called the Humboldt Forum.
