To the east of Hauptwache Square is the famous Zeil shopping street. The original name of Schillerplatz Square was replaced at Hauptwach in the early 1900s. Under the square there is a metro line and the largest traffic intersection of the city. The building of the main guard in the Baroque style, which gave the name of the square, was built in 1729. The area was rebuilt several times. In its current form, the area is a ground and large underground pedestrian terrace with shops, cafes, metro and transport stations. The inhabitants of Frankfurt call the underground part of the square “Hole”.
